What cosmetic dentistry covers

Cosmetic dentistry groups the treatments that change how a tooth looks, from the simplest to the most involved:

• Teeth whitening — supervised professional whitening that lightens natural enamel with a stronger gel than a store-bought kit. The least invasive option, and often the first one worth trying.
• Dental bonding — tooth-colored composite shaped directly onto a tooth in one visit to repair a small chip, close a narrow gap, or mask a stain. It removes little or no enamel.
• Porcelain veneers — thin porcelain shells bonded to the fronts of teeth to change their shape, color, or alignment. Veneers are irreversible, because a little enamel is removed first.
• Smile makeover — several of the above, plus crowns or tooth replacement where needed, combined into one plan when more than one thing bothers you.

A dental crown can also serve a cosmetic purpose when a tooth is both damaged and unsightly, since it rebuilds the tooth and improves its appearance at the same time.

Who cosmetic dentistry is for

Most people who come in for cosmetic work have one of a few concerns: teeth that have yellowed or stained over the years, a chip or a worn edge, a gap that has always bothered them, or teeth that look uneven. Some want a single tooth addressed; others are thinking about the whole smile.

You do not need every treatment on this page. The right starting point is a conversation about what actually bothers you. From there we match the concern to the least invasive treatment that will fix it.

Starting with the least you need

The most expensive option is rarely the only one that works, and often not the best one. If a small color change is all you want, whitening usually reaches it before anyone prepares a tooth for a veneer. If a single chip is the problem, bonding can often settle it in one visit rather than a crown. We would rather you spend less and keep more of your own enamel.

Choosing the most conservative treatment that reaches the result is how a prosthodontist is trained to think, because a change made for looks still has to respect how the tooth works and how long it lasts.

We do not offer Invisalign or clear aligners. If a cosmetic concern is really an alignment problem better solved by orthodontics, we will say so and refer you to an orthodontist we work with.

How the process works

Every cosmetic case starts the same way, whatever it ends up involving:

1. We ask what bothers you. Not what a template says should bother you, but what you notice. That focuses the plan.
2. We examine and gather records. Digital X-rays, an intraoral scan for digital impressions, and photographs give us an accurate picture of the teeth and bite. Cosmetic changes have to respect how your teeth come together, or they do not last.
3. We lay out the options and what each costs you. Usually there is a simpler path and a more involved one. We explain the trade-offs of each, including how long each lasts and how reversible it is, before you decide anything.
4. We do the work in the right order. When whitening is part of a plan that also includes veneers, crowns, or bonding, the whitening comes first, because those restorations are made to match your teeth and cannot be lightened afterward.

Timelines depend on the treatment. Whitening and bonding can often be handled in a single visit; veneers and smile makeovers take more than one. We tell you the sequence and the number of visits at the planning stage.
