What to refer

The cases best suited to a prosthodontist are the ones where the restorative plan is complex or the margin for error is small:

  • Complex restorative dentistry — heavily broken-down dentitions, failing or repeatedly failing restorations, and cases where the bite must be re-established.
  • Full-mouth rehabilitation — worn, collapsed, or extensively damaged dentitions across both arches that need a sequenced, whole-mouth plan.
  • Implant restoration and planning — treatment planning of the final restoration and restoration of implants, including cases you or a surgeon will place. Dr. Steel plans the case to the intended prosthetic result.
  • Removable and fixed prosthetics — complete and partial dentures, implant-supported dentures, and full-arch restorations, particularly difficult-fit and remake cases.
  • TMJ, occlusal, and appliance cases — occlusal splints, night guards, and sleep apnea oral appliances where the bite is central to the problem.

Root canals, orthodontics, and surgical placement are directed to the appropriate specialists; see how the network fits together below.

How co-management works

The working model is straightforward: Dr. Steel plans and delivers the restorative phase and returns the patient to your care for routine dentistry. She does not seek to take over a patient's general care.

On implant and surgical cases, planning is shared from the start. Examination and diagnostic records are gathered by Dr. Steel together with the surgeon, treatment plan options are developed and presented, and a final plan is agreed before treatment begins. Through the surgical phase, her role is to preserve function and esthetics and to deliver the definitive restoration. Where you prefer to place the implants yourself, she plans to your placement; where a surgeon is needed, placement is entrusted to trusted partner surgeons, including periodontists and oral surgeons in the immediate area.

Dr. Steel is trained in the full arc of implant care and has placed implants; in her own practice she chooses to entrust surgical placement to dedicated specialists while she concentrates on planning and restoration. Her referral network also includes trusted orthodontists and endodontists, so a patient sent for one problem is directed onward correctly rather than sent back to square one.
