What full-arch implant treatment is

"All-on-4" is shorthand for a full-arch restoration: instead of one implant per tooth, a whole arch of teeth is supported by a small number of implants placed in the jaw. The result is a fixed set of teeth that does not rest on the gums the way a conventional denture does. It is one option for replacing all of the teeth in an arch; implant-supported dentures that snap on and off are another.

Who full-arch implants are for

Full-arch implant treatment is worth considering when:

• All or most of the teeth in an arch are missing, failing, or beyond saving.
• A conventional denture feels loose, or you would rather not have a removable appliance.
• You want a fixed set of teeth and have, or can rebuild, enough bone to support the implants.

It is a larger commitment than a conventional denture, in both treatment and cost. If a well-made conventional or implant-supported denture will serve you just as well, we will say so before you choose the more involved path.

The problem it solves

Losing a full arch of teeth changes how you eat, speak, and hold your face. Conventional dentures restore a lot of that, but some patients never feel secure with an appliance that rests on the gums and can shift. Anchoring the teeth to implants gives a fixed, stable bite that stays put, and it preserves bone at the implant sites.

The process, step by step

Full-arch treatment is co-managed: Dr. Steel gathers records and plans the case with the surgeon, the final plan is agreed together, and through the surgical phase her role is to hold function and esthetics while the specialist places the implants. She describes that division of roles in her own words on the dental implants page. For a whole arch, the sequence is planned around the arch as a unit:

1. Consultation and full-arch records. Dr. Steel examines the whole arch — the teeth that remain, the bite, and the bone — and gathers CBCT 3D imaging and digital impressions, because a full arch is planned as one unit rather than tooth by tooth.
2. Planning the arch with the surgeon. Dr. Steel and the surgical specialist decide together how many implants the arch needs and where they sit to support a full set of teeth, working back from the finished bite and the support the teeth give your face.
3. Removing failing teeth and placing the implants. Where teeth in the arch are beyond saving, their removal is co-managed with the specialist, who also places the implants. Partner periodontists and oral surgeons in the immediate area handle this surgical step.
4. Healing. The implants are left to integrate with the bone — typically several months — before the final arch is completed.
5. The final fixed arch. Dr. Steel builds and fits the fixed set of teeth to your bite and your face, refining it across the planned stages so the whole arch works as one.
